Why do I have a leaky tent? Why use a seam sealer...
When canvas tents are manufactured, the seams are stitched together using heavy-duty industrial sewing machines that puncture the canvas with significant force to insert the thread. This process creates tiny holes in the fabric that are slightly larger than the thread, which can allow water to seep through. To address this, a process known as 'seasoning' or 'weathering' is often used, where the tent is soaked to allow the thread to expand and the canvas to contract, helping to fill these holes and eventually prevent leaks. Typically, any leaks will resolve after the tent has been seasoned a few times.
However, if the problem persists (some seams can be really stubborn), or if you want to accelerate the waterproofing process, using a seam sealer is highly recommended.
Seam sealers, such as chemical-based options like Stimex or traditional wax sealers, create a waterproof barrier by filling the needle holes and covering the seams where the fabric pieces overlap. This not only prevents water from entering the tent but also enhances the durability of the seams, protecting them from wear and tear caused by exposure to moisture. A properly sealed tent will keep the interior dry, improve comfort, and prolong the life of the tent, especially in wet or humid conditions. How to apply a seam sealer to your tent...
1. Choose the Right Sealer:
- Use a seam sealer specifically designed for canvas or the type of fabric your tent is made from. For canvas tents, silicone-based or urethane-based sealers are commonly recommended, whilst Wax is more traditional but still effective.
2. Prepare the Tent:
- Clean the Seams: Ensure the seams are clean and dry before application. You can use a mild soap and water solution to clean the seams, then let them dry completely.
- Set Up the Tent: Pitch the tent as you would for normal use, so the seams are taut and easily accessible.
3. Application Process:
- Test First: Before applying the sealer to the entire tent, test it on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it doesn’t discolour or damage the fabric.
- Apply the Sealer: Using a brush or the applicator tip provided, apply the seam sealer along the stitching of the seams. Make sure to cover the needle holes and areas where fabric pieces overlap.
- Smooth It Out: Use the brush, your finger (wearing a glove), or a small piece of foam to spread the sealer evenly along the seam, ensuring it penetrates into the stitching.
4. Allow to Dry:
- Let the sealer dry completely as per the manufacturer’s instructions. This usually takes 8 to 24 hours, depending on the product and weather conditions. Ensure the tent stays in a dry environment during this time.
5. Inspect and Reapply if Necessary:
- After drying, inspect the seams to ensure full coverage. If you notice any missed spots or thin areas, reapply the sealer and allow it to dry again.
